Health Insurance FAQs

Q: Where can you get health insurance?

A: Where you receive health insurance benefits is really contingent on where you're currently working and income. If you work for an employer and they provide health benefits, then you'll have to obtain coverage through them. If you work for an employer who doesn't provide health insurance benefits, then you're able to obtain coverage via ACA (affordable care act) in your marketplace. Examples of these are Covered CA, Federally Facilitated Marketplace, etc. The same is true for self-employed/1099 or business owners. Common 1099 workers who obtain coverage via ACA are realtors, mortgage loan brokers, ride sharing drivers, and many others.

Q: What are your coverage options?

A: Coverage options that are available are either HMO or PPO. The option you choose to go with really depend on the type of coverage you need and your budget.

Q: What's the difference between HMO and PPO

A: When you decide to buy an HMO plan you have to choose a primary care physician within a medical group. The referrals you receive from that provider are for you to see specialists within that medical group. The only time that you're able to see specialist that are not within the medical group is if they don't have said specialist. The PPO plan does not require you to select a primary care physician and allows you to see all of the doctors that the insurance carriers have contracts with.

Q: How much does coverage cost?

A: The cost for coverage has many different variables from age, household income, household size, the metal tier you select (bronze, silver, gold and platinum) and health plan option.

Q: What are the metal tiers and how do they affect my cost/coverage?

A: There are 4 metal tiers in total, and they consist of Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Generally speaking, a bronze tier is going to be the cheapest but has the highest deductibles and healthcare costs. As you go up a tier the price increases and the out-of-pocket healthcare costs go down. Gold tiers plans is where you no longer have deductibles and your maximum out of pocket (MOOP) begins to decrease. Platinum tier plans have no deductibles and the lowest healthcare costs overall.

Q: What is the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?

A: The comprehensive health care reform law enacted in March 2010 (sometimes known as ACA, PPACA, or “Obamacare”).

The law has 3 primary goals:

  1. Make affordable health insurance available to more people. The law provides consumers with subsidies (“premium tax credits”) that lower costs for households with incomes between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL).

If your income is above 400% FPL, you may still qualify for a premium tax credit.

If your income is at or below 150% FPL, you may qualify to enroll in or change Marketplace coverage through a Special Enrollment Period.

  1. Expand the Medicaid program to cover all adults with income below 138% of the FPL. (Not all states have expanded their Medicaid programs.)

  1. Support innovative medical care delivery methods designed to lower the costs of health care generally.
